Alan, Brazil – Level 3

In 2014 I had to spend my accumulated vacations and I did not know where to go. I did not have much money, so I could not do anything expensive. Time was passing and I still hadn’t thought of anything interesting to do, so when the day finally came, I got my backpack, bought a plane ticket and started the craziest journey of my life.

I went backpacking through Panama, the US and Canada. The only thing I didn’t plan carefully was where I would stay, but it was too late for that. I found out an app called CouchSurfing and as soon as I arrived anywhere, I would have more than a place to stay.

Couchsurfing promotes cultural exchanges and a new perspective for tourists so that they experience the cities as locals, with the help of locals, for free. I got to see amazing monuments such as the Panama Canal, the Statue of Liberty and Central Park in New York, the Space Needle in Seattle and so many other sights. I crossed Canada and the United States by bus and train, and I saw both the east and the west coasts.

Staying in local people’s houses, I made good friends who I visit whenever I get the chance to. I know that this unthought act is not recommended. I should say, though, it changed my life forever!
